Tras encarcelar durante un tiempo a Maximiliano I de Austria en su lucha por la autonomía, este último prohibió la celebración de una feria y otras festividades.
En un intento por apaciguarlo , Brujas organizó una gran fiesta para él y luego pidió permiso para celebrar otra feria anual , recaudar impuestos y... construir un nuevo manicomio .
Él respondió: "¡ Cierra todas las puertas de Brujas y tendrás un manicomio!".
