Alrededor del Yser se habla de las cinco grandes batallas en Ypres durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. La más fascinante fue la Tercera Batalla, la de Passchendaele desde julio de 1917. Medio millón de muertos, desaparecidos y heridos fueron el costo de una ganancia de terreno de 8 kilómetros en 100 días. El objetivo era recuperar los puertos flamencos y así detener la guerra de submarinos. Eso fracasó.
En el Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 se encuentra la historia de estas cinco batallas, con la tercera batalla, por supuesto, como punto culminante. El museo no solo tiene una amplia colección de objetos históricos, fotos y películas. La batalla también se presenta de manera visual. Además, se pusieron en práctica varias técnicas de diferentes ejércitos para construir trincheras.
