Está situada a unos 25 kilómetros al norte de Ginebra a orillas del lago Lemán. Limita al norte con Trélex y Duillier, al este con Prangins, al sur con el lago y la comuna francesa de Messery , al suroeste con Crans-près-Céligny, y al oeste con Eysins, Signy-Avenex y Grens.
Fue fundada por los romanos entre los años 50 y 44 a. C. bajo el nombre «De los equestris del lulia de Colonia”, el centro urbano de la ciudad lo llamaron «Noviodunum». Llegó a ser una de las colonias romanas más importantes en Suiza, con foro, basílica y anfiteatro .
