Mattstedt es una localidad del municipio de Ilmtal-Weinstraße en el noreste del distrito de Weimarer Land.
La primera parte del nombre proviene del eslavo mät, que significaba "cortar, corte". En lugar de stedt, se refiere a un lugar o plaza central, lo que indica un período de origen en el siglo III o IV. Los antiguos registros de iglesias mencionan una familia noble que llevaba los nombres Matstat, Mattstedt, Mattstete o Matstetten. Estos eran Popo o Poppo de Matstete, mencionados el 20 de mayo de 1295 y el 13 de marzo de 1298, Adalbertus de Matstete, mencionado entre 1225 y 1228, Otto gen. Saxo de Matstete, mencionado en 1306, así como Heinrich von Matstede, mencionado el 9 de mayo de 1323. Al norte de Mattstedt hay una despoblada llamada Stedten. La parcela todavía se llama así hoy en día.
