Mattstedt est un hameau de la commune d'Ilmtal-Weinstraße, au nord-est du district de Weimarer Land.
La première partie du nom provient du slave mät, qui signifiait « faucher, fauche ». Statt, stedt signifie lieu ou place centrale, ce qui indique une période de création au 3ème ou 4ème siècle. De vieux registres d'église font référence à une famille noble portant le nom Matstat, Mattstedt, Mattstete ou Matstetten. Il s'agissait de Popo ou Poppo de Matstete, mentionné le 20 mai 1295 et le 13 mars 1298, Adalbertus de Matstete, mentionné entre 1225 et 1228, Otto dit Saxo de Matstete, mentionné en 1306, ainsi que Heinrich von Matstede, mentionné le 9 mai 1323. Au nord de Mattstedt se trouve une ruine appelée Stedten. La parcelle est encore appelée ainsi aujourd'hui.
