Chemnitz ) es una ciudad del estado federado alemán de Sajonia a orillas del río Chemnitz , a 69 km al sudeste de Leipzig. Con más de 247 000 habitantes , Chemnitz es la tercera ciudad más grande del estado después de Leipzig y Dresde. Entre 1953 y 1990, durante la vigencia de la República Democrática Alemana, la ciudad recibió el nombre de Karl-Marx-Stadt .
Chemnitz está ubicada en el suroeste del estado federado de Sajonia, asentada en un terreno limitado al sur por las estribaciones de los montes Metálicos occidentales y al norte por las colinas centrales sajonas. Con una superficie total de 220 km², se encuentra a 300 metros sobre el nivel del mar y debe parte de su desarrollo al río Chemnitz, del que ha tomado el topónimo.
