Altona-Altstadt es una antigua ciudad que perteneció a Dinamarca y que actualmente es un barrio del sector oeste de la ciudad-estado de Hamburgo, en Alemania. Es también el centro administrativo de un distrito con el mismo nombre, Altona que comprende 14 barrios o antiguos municipios independientes. A finales del 2011 tenía 27.129 habitantes en una superficie de 2.8 km².[1]
Según la etimología popular, el nombre de Altona vendría del bajo alemán «All to nah», que significa «bien demasiado cerca», un calificativo dado por los vecinos comerciantes de Hamburgo, que temían su competencia. Una etimología más probable sería el nombre de un afluente del Elba hoy desaparecido, denominado Altenawe o Altenau , claramente visible en mapas antiguos.[2]
