El castillo de Poppelsdorf es la construcción sucesora de un castillo de agua gótico destruido en la guerra de Truchsess en 1583, y fue planificado y edificado entre 1715 y 1740. El arquitecto fue el francés Robert de Cotte. Los constructores fueron el príncipe elector de Colonia, Joseph Clemens, y su sobrino y sucesor, Clemens Augusto, quien lo amplió según los planos de Balthasar Neumann. También se le llamó palacio de placer Clemensruhe en honor a sus constructores.
