Het Poppelsdorfer Slot is de opvolger van een gotisch waterkasteel dat tijdens de Truchsess-oorlog in 1583 werd verwoest en werd van 1715 tot 1740 ontworpen en gebouwd. De architect was de Fransman Robert de Cotte. De bouwheren waren de Keulse keurvorst Joseph Clemens en zijn neef en opvolger Clemens August, die het naar plannen van Balthasar Neumann liet uitbreiden. Naar zijn bouwheren werd het ook wel Lustschloss Clemensruhe genoemd.
