El barrio de Merkenich abarca el área de los tres pueblos ribereños Merkenich, Rheinkassel y Langel, así como las áreas industriales y comerciales situadas al oeste de estos. Aquí se encontraba, entre otros, el pueblito de Feldkassel, completamente demolido en los años 70. Esta área está limitada por el lago Fühlinger.
Al sureste de Rheinkassel se encuentra Kasselberg, que consta de una posada, un camping y algunas pocas casas. Kasselberg está situado frente al dique del Rin y ya se inunda con niveles de agua más bajos. De lo contrario, Merkenich ha estado bien protegido en los últimos años gracias a un aumento y estabilización del dique.
