El Buey Rojo es una institución penitenciaria en Halle, Am Kirchtor 20. El nombre se puede rastrear desde finales del siglo XIX, aunque su origen es incierto. Se dice que se debe al color de la mampostería del edificio.
Después de seis años de construcción, el Buey Rojo fue inaugurado en 1842 como "Institución Penitenciaria, Educativa y de Rehabilitación del Reino de Prusia". El 7 de febrero de 1885, en el patio de la institución, fueron ejecutados los anarquistas August Reinsdorf y Emil Küchler. Ellos habían intentado asesinar al emperador Guillermo I el 28 de septiembre de 1883 con atentado en el Monumento de Niederwald en Rüdesheim. Durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, desde febrero hasta agosto de 1917, el soldado y posterior miembro del Reichstag por el KPD, Werner Scholem, estuvo preso en Halle, el cual había sido condenado a diez meses de prisión en enero de 1917 por participar en una manifestación antibelicista en uniforme. Pasó las últimas semanas de su condena en la prisión central fortificada de Spandau.
