El monasterio franciscano en Hamm fue fundado en 1455 por el conde Gerhard von der Mark en Hamm. Para este propósito, el soberano territorial puso a disposición de los franciscanos observantes, junto a varios edificios profanos que posteriormente fueron utilizados como edificios del monasterio, la capilla del castillo de la ciudad de Hamm dedicada a santa Inés. La capilla fue ampliada a iglesia del monasterio medio siglo después y consagrada en 1515. Los otros edificios del monasterio fueron construidos más tarde.
