Mogontiacum fue una ciudad importante en la frontera norte del Imperio Romano, donde estaban estacionadas dos legiones romanas. Alrededor del castellum creció un gran asentamiento civil. El teatro de piedra fue construido en el siglo I d.C. Es posible que ya hubiera un edificio de madera antes. El teatro tenía un diámetro de 166 metros y el escenario medía 42 metros de ancho. Podían acomodarse aproximadamente 10,000 espectadores. Con esto, el teatro de Maguncia es el teatro antiguo más grande al norte de los Alpes.
