El sitio o yacimiento fosilífero de Messel es una cantera abandonada en el bosque de Sprendlingen, en la periferia del pueblo de Messel, a unos 9 km de la ciudad de Darmstadt y a 35 km al sureste de Fráncfort del Meno, Alemania. En el pasado se explotaban las lutitas bituminosas - que conforman los sedimentos donde se hallan los fósiles - con el fin de obtener petróleo. El lugar tiene una gran importancia geológica y, principalmente, paleontológica debido a la multitud de fósiles que se han encontrado en un excepcional estado de conservación.
