La abadía de Gandersheim fue fundada en 852 por el conde sajón Liudolf, el patriarca y epónimo de los Liudolfinger. Para este proyecto, recibió durante un viaje de peregrinación a Roma la aprobación del Papa Sergio II y las reliquias necesarias para la fundación de los santos papas Anastasio e Inocencio. El convento se estableció inicialmente en el monasterio de Brunshausen hasta que se completaron los edificios del monasterio y la iglesia del convento.
La abadía de Gandersheim, debido a su carácter, era un convento familiar principesco y, tras su fundación, ricamente dotado, alcanzó pronto una rápida florecimiento.
