La esclusa Schachtschleuse Minden fue construida entre 1911 y 1914 como parte de la construcción del canal Mittelland en el cruce de vías navegables de Minden, como descenso norte hacia el Weser, y así representa la conexión más corta entre el canal Mittelland y el Weser. Al mismo tiempo, se construyó una esclusa prácticamente idéntica en el canal Dortmund-Ems, la esclusa Schachtschleuse Henrichenburg. La esclusa de Minden tiene una longitud útil de cámara de 85 metros y un ancho de 10 metros. Gracias a los embalses laterales integrados en la construcción, con una capacidad de llenado de 7300 m³, es ahorrativa en agua en comparación con el descenso sur a través de las esclusas superior e inferior y, por lo tanto, estaba a la vanguardia de la técnica en su momento de construcción.
