La estación de tren de Herne está situada en la línea ferroviaria Duisburgo-Dortmund en el centro de Herne, en la región del Ruhr, y es la segunda estación más importante de la ciudad después de la estación central de Wanne-Eickel.
La estación fue inaugurada en 1847 junto con el ferrocarril de Colonia-Minden. Se encontraba entre la entonces aldea de Herne, con aproximadamente 1000 habitantes, y el castillo de agua de Strünkede. Esta primera estación estaba al sur de la actual, en la calle Von-der-Heydt. También sirvió para conectar la ciudad de Bochum, situada más al sur, que no tuvo su propia estación hasta 14 años después. Por lo tanto, la estación llevó el nombre de Herne-Bochum hasta 1860.
