La gare de Herne est située sur la ligne de chemin de fer Duisburg-Dortmund au centre-ville de Herne dans le district de la Ruhr et est la deuxième gare la plus importante de la ville après la gare principale de Wanne-Eickel.
La gare a été inaugurée en 1847 avec le chemin de fer Cologne-Mindener. Elle se trouvait entre le village de Herne d'autrefois, qui comptait environ 1000 habitants, et le château d'eau de Strünkede. Cette première gare était située au sud de celle d'aujourd'hui, à l'adresse Von-der-Heydt-Straße. Elle servait également de connexion à la ville de Bochum, située plus au sud, qui n'a obtenu sa propre gare que 14 ans plus tard. C'est pourquoi la gare a porté le nom de Herne-Bochum jusqu'en 1860.
