El Parque Paisajístico Mechtenberg se encuentra en Gelsenkirchen, con pequeñas áreas en los territorios de Bochum y Essen. Tiene un tamaño de 290 hectáreas.

En el marco de la IBA, el Mechtenberg fue considerado la única elevación natural producida por la glaciación en la región del Emscher, así como un vertedero y un antiguo vertedero en el Nattmannsweg, que fueron mejorados mediante la plantación de árboles en las avenidas y en la reforestación, con huertos, un círculo de árboles y caminos para bicicletas y senderistas.
