El lago Bänisch se encuentra en el norte del área de la ciudad de Rheda-Wiedenbrück, en el distrito de Gütersloh. Está ubicado en el borde del bosque de Rheda, que tiene más de 1.000 hectáreas, justo al lado de la B64.
El lago Bänisch se utiliza principalmente para la pesca. El lago es gestionado por la Asociación de Pescadores Deportivos Rheda-Gütersloh e.V., que también se encarga de la renaturalización del área. Desde 2012, la juventud de los pescadores de la asociación ha plantado nenúfares y lirios de agua, ha construido islas flotantes plantadas y ha repartido leña muerta en redes en el fondo del lago para proporcionar nuevos refugios para los peces. En 2013, recibió el premio de protección del medio ambiente de la ciudad de Rheda-Wiedenbrück por ello.
