De Bänischsee ligt in het noorden van het gebied van de stad Rheda-Wiedenbrück in de gemeente Gütersloh. Het bevindt zich aan de rand van het meer dan 1.000 hectare grote Rhedaer Forst, direct aan de B64.
De Bänischsee wordt vooral gebruikt om te vissen. Het meer wordt beheerd door de Sportfischereiverein Rheda-Gütersloh e.V., die zich ook bezighoudt met de herinrichting van het gebied. Zo heeft de vissersjeugd van de vereniging sinds 2012 vijver- en waterlelies geplant, zijn er beplante drijvende eilanden opgericht en is er dood hout in netten op de bodem van het meer verspreid om nieuwe schuilplaatsen voor vissen te bieden. In 2013 ontving ze hiervoor de milieubeschermingsprijs van de stad Rheda-Wiedenbrück.
