La cuenca del Bajo Rin es una zona geológica de hundimiento en el oeste de Alemania. Su formación comenzó hace unos 30 millones de años. Desde entonces, se han acumulado más de 1000 m de sedimentos en su centro. La estructura geológica de la cuenca del Bajo Rin se encuentra entre las ciudades de Aquisgrán, Roermond, Wesel y Bonn, y abarca las dos grandes unidades naturales de la cuenca del Bajo Rin y la llanura del Bajo Rin. De gran importancia económica son, sobre todo, los poderosos lignitos extraídos en extensas minas a cielo abierto y la minería del carbón de piedra, que hoy en día ha quedado en gran medida paralizada.
