Aquí había un edificio famoso: la Cancillería del Reich. Fue aquí donde tuvo lugar la famosa Conferencia de Berlín de 1884-1885. Ese fue un hito importante en la geografía y la historia de África. La conferencia tuvo lugar el sábado 15 de noviembre de 1884 en la residencia oficial de Bismarck aquí en Wilhelmstrasse. Las principales potencias dominantes de la conferencia fueron Francia, Alemania, Gran Bretaña y Portugal. Redibujaron África sin considerar las fronteras culturales y lingüísticas que ya estaban establecidas. Al final de la conferencia, África fue dividida en 50 colonias. Los asistentes establecieron quién estaba a cargo de cada una de estas nuevas divisiones. También planearon, de manera no vinculante, terminar con el comercio de esclavos en África. Leopoldo II obtuvo un muy buen trato de un lado de esto. Obtuvo el Congo y el área de Katanga, muy rica en minerales. También logró su acuerdo para obtener acceso del Congo al Atlántico para poder exportar todos los bienes "cosechados" en la colonia.
