Griebo se encuentra en el parque natural Fläming, en la desembocadura del arroyo Grieboer en el Elba. La ciudad de Coswig está situada al oeste, en inmediata vecindad, mientras que al este limita con el barrio de Apollensdorf de Wittenberg.
En 1201, Griebo aparece por primera vez en un documento. De esta época proviene la iglesia de San Juan de estilo románico tardío del lugar, que fue utilizada especialmente en la época de la Guerra de los Treinta Años como iglesia fortificada, ya que Griebo estaba ubicada en una carretera militar y a menudo era saqueada.
