Griebo si trova nel parco naturale di Fläming all'imbocco del torrente Grieboer nell'Elba. La città di Coswig si trova a ovest, in immediata vicinanza, mentre a est confina con il quartiere di Apollensdorf a Wittenberg.
Griebo appare per la prima volta in un documento nel 1201. Da questo periodo proviene la chiesa di San Giovanni in stile romanico tardivo del luogo, che fu utilizzata in particolare durante la Guerra dei Trent'anni come chiesa fortificata, poiché Griebo si trovava lungo una strada militare ed era spesso saccheggiata.
