Gera es una ciudad situada en Alemania central. Se encuentra en los alrededores de la capital del estado, Erfurt. Es la segunda mayor ciudad así como una de las tres ciudades libres de mayor importancia de Turingia y tiene el estatus de una ciudad-distrito . Otras ciudades próximas son Chemnitz , Leipzig , Halle y Erfurt .
