El Portal de Petersburgo , cuya construcción comenzó en 1620 , es una puerta monumental que forma parte del antiguo Palacio Electoral (Kurfürstliches Palais), que fue la residencia de los arzobispos y electores de Tréveris desde el siglo XVI hasta finales del siglo XVIII.
Cuando el Niederschloss (Castillo Inferior) del palacio fue demolido en gran parte después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, solo quedaron la Torre Roja y el Portal de Petersburgo.
El nombre no tiene nada que ver con la ciudad de San Petersburgo, sino que hace referencia al santo patrón de Tréveris, San Pedro. Una estatua de San Pedro, obra de Hans Rupprecht Hoffmann el Joven, corona el portal.
