Fue el primer barrio español de América. Se inició como barrio de gente pobre ligada al tráfico marinero y a los mercados. La zona era de importancia económica porque los productos llegaban por el primitivo puerto y a esto se le suman la presencia del gobierno de la colonia en la zona sur del barrio, proceso que continuó por varios siglos. Iniciando cerca de la calle Colón e incluyendo la calle Vicente Celestino Duarte hasta acercarnos por la calle las Atarazanas podemos observar el conjunto de casas construidas en el siglo XVI y recrear en nuestra imaginación aquella época.
