Fu il primo quartiere spagnolo d'America. Iniziò come un quartiere di persone povere legate al traffico marittimo e ai mercati. La zona era di importanza economica perché i prodotti arrivavano attraverso il primitivo porto e a questo si aggiunse la presenza del governo della colonia nella zona sud del quartiere, un processo che continuò per diversi secoli. Iniziando vicino a via Colón e includendo via Vicente Celestino Duarte fino a raggiungere via delle Atarazanas possiamo osservare il gruppo di case costruite nel XVI secolo e ricreare nella nostra immaginazione quell'epoca.
