El Reloj de Sol fue construido en 1753 durante el reinado de Carlos III por orden de Francisco de Rubio y Peñaranda, gobernador de Santo Domingo. El reloj está situado frente al Museo de las Casas Reales. En la época de la colonia este museo era la Real Audiencia y Palacio de la Capitanía General. El reloj se construyó para que los magistrados pudieran ver la hora desde sus despachos. El reloj tiene dos caras: la Sureste donde se ven las horas de la mañana y la Suroeste donde se leen las horas de la tarde. Las horas son marcadas por un gnomon o placa metálica cuya sombra marca las horas en las caras. Esta pieza (con sus características) es una de las pocas que se mantienen funcionando en América.
