Solen blev bygget i 1753 under kong Carlos III's regeringstid på ordre af Francisco de Rubio y Peñaranda, guvernør i Santo Domingo. Uret ligger overfor Museet for de Kgl. Huse. På kolonitidens tid var dette museum den Kgl. Audien og Palæet for Generalguvernementet. Uret blev bygget, så dommerne kunne se tiden fra deres kontorer. Uret har to ansigtter: det sydøstlige, hvor timerne om morgenen kan ses, og det sydvestlige, hvor timerne om eftermiddagen læses. Timerne angives af en gnomon eller metalplade, hvis skygge markerer timerne på ansigtterne. Dette stykke (med sine karakteristika) er et af de få, der stadig fungerer i Amerika.
