Fuenmayor es un municipio de la comunidad autónoma de La Rioja . Se sitúa entre el río Ebro y la carretera N-232, junto a la línea de ferrocarril Castejón-Bilbao, lo que la sitúa en un lugar estratégico que ha propiciado su desarrollo.
Fuenmayor es citada por primera vez en el siglo XI, en un documento en el cual la reina Estefanía cedía esta localidad y otras al monasterio de Santa María la Real de Nájera. Pero restos celtibéricos y romanos indican que ya estaba habitada con anterioridad, y se sabe que el asentamiento se erigía en el territorio que llamaban Varía o Varegia, tierras conocidas y citadas en tiempos de los cónsules.[4]
En el año 567 fue sometida junto con Nájera y su zona de influencia por el rey godo Leovigildo.
