Besalú es un municipio y localidad española de la provincia de Gerona, en la comunidad autónoma de Cataluña. Perteneciente a la comarca de La Garrocha, cuenta con una población de 2502 habitantes . La localidad es un centro turístico gracias a su arquitectura medieval.
El nombre original era Bisuldunum y como el nombre indica, era una fortaleza entre dos ríos: el Fluviá al sur y el Capellades al norte.
