La unión de los ríos Zaldú, denominado también Zaldu erreka o Zaldua, procedente de Zaldívar y Bérriz, y el río Astolako erreka que se forma en el barrio abadiñotarra de Celayeta cuando los ríos Mendiola, procedente del barrio del mismo nombre y Zumelegierreka que procedente de Elorrio y Achondo, en la localidad abadiñotarra de Matiena recibe con propiedad el nombre de río Ibaizábal. Algunos autores indican que el Ibaizábal se forma a partir de la unión del río Zumelegui y el río Arrázola, que se unen en el valle de Axpe Achondo, también hay quien nombra como Ibaizábal al río Zaldú. El Zaldú o Zaldúa recibe, poco antes de su encuentro con el Astolako erreka, al arroyo Arrierreka que baja desde el macizo del Oiz.
