El Valle de Somorrostro fue, hasta 1805, una de las 10 repúblicas en las que se dividía la comarca de Las Encartaciones en el territorio histórico de Vizcaya. Actualmente, se denomina a una parte del territorio de la extinta entidad geográfica bajo el nombre de Margen Izquierda y la situada más al interior bajo el nombre no oficial de Zona Minera, unas subcomarcas del Gran Bilbao, aunque oficialmente a ambas se las denomina Margen Izquierda;[1] mientras las situadas más al oeste han mantenido el nombre de Las Encartaciones.
