Abd-al-Aziz ibn Mussa ibn Nussayr conquistó Asturias poco después de la invasión musulmana de la península Ibérica en el año 711, pero los astures tardaron muy poco en sublevarse contra el poder musulmán y derrotaron a los invasores en una escaramuza cerca del monte Auseva. Este enfrentamiento tuvo lugar, según algunos historiadores, en el año 718 y, según otros, en el 722 y ha pasado a la historia con el nombre de batalla de Covadonga .
