Esta iglesia fue construida extramuros de Jerez en el siglo XV. Se construyó sobre el solar donde ya se había edificado una ermita del mismo nombre durante la Reconquista, constituyendo así el germen del ahora popular barrio de Santiago.
Es un edificio gótico al que se le ha añadido el remate de la torre y la espadaña de estilo barroco, así como la plaza "Capilla del Sagrario".
La iglesia tiene tres puertas góticas . El altar tiene un baldaquín del jerezano José Gallegos Arnosa.
Durante la restauración del siglo XXI , se descubrieron graves defectos estructurales en la iglesia, lo que provocó el cierre inmediato de la iglesia. La iglesia fue reabierta en 2016.
