El museo militar está ubicado en la Plaza de España entre la Puerta de Aragón y la Torre Norte.
Es heredero de gran parte de las colecciones de la antigua Maestranza de Artillería de Sevilla, cuyo Memorial de 1897 hace referencia a una "sala modelo", considerada el germen del primer museo de artillería de la ciudad de Sevilla. Con el tiempo, los fondos se han ido ampliando hasta incluir las colecciones de la Maestranza, las del departamento de pirotecnia militar y sus escuelas de formación, la Real Fábrica de Artillería y las de unidades militares disueltas, principalmente de la Plaza de Sevilla.
El museo abrió sus puertas el 18 de diciembre de 1992 y fue renovado en el año 2000 para darle las instalaciones que hoy se pueden visitar. La rehabilitación ha permitido recuperar la concepción arquitectónica original del diseñador del conjunto de la Plaza de España, Aníbal González.
