Es el chef-lieu de dos cantones y da nombre a otros dos de los que no forma parte ni es chef-lieu.
El 9 de junio de 1944 fue el escenario de la matanza de Tulle, episodio de represalia contra la Resistencia Francesa por parte del ejército alemán durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial en el que 99 civiles resultaron ejecutados por ahorcamiento.
