Vichy es conocida como una ciudad balneario y de descanso. También fue la capital de la Francia de Vichy durante la ocupación nazi alemana de la Segunda Guerra Mundial desde 1940 hasta 1944. Vichy se encuentra a orillas del río Allier. La fuente del Allier está en la cercana meseta del Macizo Central, que se encuentra a solo unos pocos kilómetros al sur, cerca de la capital de la región, Clermont-Ferrand.
