El 15 de agosto de 1944, un bombardero francés B-26 Marauder y un B-17 estadounidense intentaron destruir el puente ferroviario y el puente vehicular que cruzan la Durance en Sisteron. Las condiciones meteorológicas eran desfavorables y se falló en el objetivo de los puentes. Uno de los bombarderos dejó caer accidentalmente varias bombas sobre la ciudad. Estas cayeron, entre otros lugares, sobre una iglesia llena, causando 100 muertos. También la ciudadela resultó gravemente dañada. Dos días después, se intentó nuevamente destruir los puentes. Y esta vez con éxito.
