Desde 1575 hasta 1622, Aigues-Mortes fue uno de los ocho refugios seguros otorgados a los protestantes. La revocación del Edicto de Nantes en 1685 provocó una severa represión del protestantismo, que se marcó en Languedoc y los Cévennes a principios del siglo XVIII con la "Guerra de los Camisardos". Al igual que otras torres de la ciudad, a partir de 1686, la Torre Constance se utilizó como prisión para los hugonotes que se negaron a convertirse al catolicismo romano. En 1703, Abraham Mazel, líder de los Camisardos, logró escapar con dieciséis compañeros.
