A partir de 1328 se fabricó papel en la zona de Ambert con fábricas de papel. La ubicación era favorable porque el agua no contiene cal. Richard de Bas es un molino de agua que funciona como fábrica de papel. Hay un museo anexo que cuenta la historia del papel en Ambert (Puy-de-Dôme). El molino y el museo llevan el nombre de Thomas Richard, el rico fabricante de papel que fue, entre otras cosas, propietario de esta fábrica de papel. Fue asesinado en el Col de la Croix de l'Homme mort, en la frontera de los departamentos de Loire y Puy-de-Dôme.
