Since 1328, paper has been made in and near Ambert. The location was convenient because there is no calcium in the water. Richard de Bas is a mill that still functions as a paper mill. There is an adjoining museum showing the history of the paper production in Ambert (Puy-de-Dôme). The mill and museum are named after Richard Thomas, the wealthy paper manufacturer who owned this paper mill. He was murdered on the Col de la Croix de l'Homme Mort, on the border of the departments of Loire and Puy-de-Dôme.
