La capilla de los Penitentes Negros albergó una de las órdenes importantes de la ciudad papal. Los "Penitentes Grises" fueron los primeros en una larga fila de penitentes de Aviñón. Los "Penitentes Negros" fueron fundados en 1488 por un grupo de nobles florentinos. La cofradía de los "Penitentes Blancos" fue fundada en 1527. Los "Penitentes Azules" se formaron en 1557 por disidentes de otros gremios. A finales del siglo dieciséis se establecieron los "Penitentes Negros de la Misericordia". El movimiento continuó con la fundación de los "Penitentes Violetas" (1622), luego los "Penitentes Rojos" (1700). La Revolución puso fin a esta expansión y hoy solo quedan los "Penitentes Grises".
