Conquistada y abandonada una y otra vez por unos y otros, la cresta de Thiaumont está coronada por una granja al este y una fortificación al oeste, construida en 1887. Entre estos dos puntos se alza el gran osario de Douaumont.
Sólo quedan algunas varillas metálicas y bloques de hormigón dispersos de la estructura que fue volada por la artillería alemana. El 23 de junio, una violenta ofensiva alemana partió de esta cresta, engullendo la estructura bajo un dosel de obuses.
