Conquered and abandoned time and again, by some and others, the Thiaumont ridge is topped by a farmhouse to the east and a structure to the west, built in 1887. Between these 2 points stands the Douaumont Ossuary.
All that remains of the structure, which was pulverized by German artillery, are a few metal rods and scattered concrete blocks. On June 23, a violent German offensive started from this ridge, engulfing the structure under a canopy of shells.
