El desarrollo económico de Metz alcanzó su apogeo en los siglos XII y XIV, dando lugar a una aristocracia que se dotó de suntuosas residencias, como el Hôtel de Heu. Construido en estilo gótico a mediados del siglo XV por una familia de patricios de la región del Mosa, esta residencia fue adquirida en 1661 por Ana de Austria, quien creó un seminario para la Misión de San Vicente de Paul.
