De economische ontwikkeling van Metz bereikte haar hoogtepunt in de 12e en 14e eeuw en gaf aanleiding tot een aristocratie die zichzelf voorzag van weelderige residenties, zoals het Hôtel de Heu. Deze residentie, die halverwege de 15e eeuw in gotische stijl werd gebouwd door een patriciërsfamilie uit de Maasstreek, werd in 1661 gekocht door Anne van Oostenrijk, die er een seminarie voor de missie Saint-Vincent-de-Paul vestigde.
