Convertida en catedral en 1536 cuando el arzobispo de Maguelone fue trasladado a Montpellier, Saint-Pierre fue en sus orígenes la capilla del monasterio benedictino de Saint-Benoît.
No se puede perder: el pórtico, un impresionante baldaquín sujeto por enormes pilares circulares de 4,55 m de diámetro que en su día exhibían los escudos de armas de Urbano V, estudiante y profesor en Montpellier, nombrado obispo y posteriormente elegido papa en Avignon (1362).
Ejemplo representativo del gótico meridional, es la única iglesia medieval del Écusson que ha sobrevivido a las Guerras Santas.
En su interior se encuentra una obra maestra de Sébastien Bourdon que le trasladará a la vida artística de Montpellier del siglo XVII.
